Brides. We’ve got your backs. Here’s 15 major makeup tips to keep in mind, to keep you looking fabulously flawless on your big day(s).
1. Start your Skincare Regime well in Advance
The first step to looking good in makeup, is to have beautiful, smooth skin. Start scheduling in your monthly massages, facials, and scrubs 6 months prior to your wedding. Planning a wedding is so stressful, that scheduling in me-time is extremely important. Not only is time away from everything therapeutic, but its also important to help your skin look glowy and smooth on your big day 🙂
2. A Makeup Trial is Imperative
This is especially true in the case of brides who don’t have a lot of experience with having a lot of makeup on. You need to get comfortable enough with your artist to make sure you’re going to be happy with the end product, and most importantly, to request for changes on your day, if you see something you don’t like.
3. Remember. You’re going to be looking at these pictures 20 years from now.
Where makeup is concerned, remember – classic is the best way to go. Steer clear of trends, and bright, poppy colours, because 20 years from now, we don’t want you to cringe when looking at your gorgeous, young face 🙂
4. Exfoliate, Cleanse, Moisturize, and Prime
Your makeup needs to last you the entire day and well into the night. A primer will help smooth out your skin and make your skin look smooth and flawless.
5. Prep your Lips
Don’t forget to prep your lips as well. Lip balm is your bestie the night before, so they’re soft and moisturized before the lipstick goes on, rather than dry and flaky (ick!) Also remember, lip gloss fades quickly, so be prepared for lots of touch-ups during the day. If you’re looking for fuss-free lips, use a matte lipstick with a lip-primer. Lip primers are magic wands that keep lips moisturized, while also ensuring that your lipstick stays put throughout the day.
6. Eyeshadow Primer is a Must
Oily lids are the bane of our existence, and are the number 1 cause of eyeshadow creasing. If you’re not sure if your lids are oily, use an eyeshadow primer anyway. It will make your colours look more vibrant, will help your eye makeup last all day and evening, and will ensure no ugly creasing happens.
7. Fill your Brows
Your brows frame your face, and are often the last, and most forgotten step in the makeup process. Make sure the strokes are short and small and replicate your brow hair. This step makes your face look finished and polished, so definitely don’t give it a skip.
8. Use False Lashes
False eyelashes make your eyes look bigger, give them more depth, and add a level of magic to your makeup that you just can’t achieve without them. If you’re going for a full-on glamorous look, use a strip of lashes. For a more understated look, use individuals. Either way, don’t go into your wedding without them.
9. Buy the Key Pieces of your Wedding Day Makeup
It really helps to have your makeup on hand when disaster strikes.
10. Today, use Waterproof Makeup
We all know how emotional wedding days can get. From sad and happy tears, to when you want to break it down on the dance-floor, waterproof makeup can take away a lot of your makeup-smearing stresses. Don’t forget to ensure that your lash glue is also waterproof.
11. Bridesmaids to the Rescue!
Have one of your bridesmaids carry blotting powder / papers, lipstick, gloss, eyelash glue, and q-tips in their purse.
12. Remember, you’re getting Made Up for the Photos
This is an interesting one. The camera tends to underplay makeup, which means that you will need to apply a little extra makeup for the pictures and video. A simple way to test if your makeup is camera-ready, is to snap a picture with your camera-phone in good, shaded daylight, once the makeup is complete. This will give you a relatively accurate indication of how your face will look on your big day. Don’t forget that your hair and clothes will complete the look, so if you feel like your makeup is too heavy while you’re in your jeans and tee, just remember that all the makeup is going to be complemented with your gorgeous dress and hair.
13. Today, SPF is NOT your Friend
Anything over SPF-15 creates a white, ghost-like flash back in photos. This is an insanely important thing to keep in mind, because not only can your moisturizer have SPF, but lately, even foundations, BB/CC creams, etc. come laden with SPF.
14. Play it Safe
If you’re considering doing something drastic like changing your hair colour or length just before the wedding, think again, since you just can’t be sure of how things will turn out at the last moment. For your wedding day, the best thing to do is aim to look like a more beautiful version of yourself.
15. Most importantly, Trust Your Gut
If you feel like you’re not happy with the end result on the day – speak up. While its really lovely to be flattered and pampered on your wedding day, if you feel like something’s not right, you need that one friend / sibling around you who will tell you the truth. Just trust your gut and go with what you believe.
